¿Qué es un Testamento Vital?

Un testamento vital, también conocido como una directiva de atención médica o directiva anticipada, es un documento legal que le permite expresar sus deseos sobre la atención médica al final de la vida. Su propósito es garantizar que las personas responsables de su atención médica sepan cómo desea ser tratado si llega a ser incapaz de comunicar sus deseos.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre un Testamento Vital y un Testamento de Última Voluntad?

¿Por qué debería tener un Testamento Vital?

Un testamento vital no elimina su capacidad de tomar decisiones sobre asuntos relacionados con el final de la vida mientras usted esté en condiciones de hacerlo. Si cuenta con un testamento vital, aún puede expresar sus deseos respecto a su atención médica en el momento correspondiente. Usted conserva el derecho a tomar decisiones sobre su atención médica y tratamientos. Sin embargo, si llega a estar incapacitado mental o físicamente y no puede actuar por sí mismo, sin un testamento vital nadie sabrá qué decisiones le habría gustado que se tomaran respecto a su atención. Sus seres queridos o médicos podrían verse en la difícil posición de tomar decisiones vitales o incluso determinantes para la vida sin conocer realmente cuáles habrían sido sus deseos.

Incluso si no padece una enfermedad o un problema de salud grave, contar con un testamento vital puede servir como medida de protección ante eventos inesperados que requieran medidas de soporte vital, como la reanimación cardiopulmonar (RCP).

La mejor manera de asegurarse de tener un testamento vital que entienda y que refleje adecuadamente sus deseos al final de la vida es que sea redactado y formalizado por un abogado. Contar con la ayuda de un abogado puede ayudarle a tener confianza en la atención que recibirá durante las últimas etapas de su vida. Un abogado puede asesorarle sobre todos los factores que debe considerar al determinar sus deseos al final de la vida.).
